Eat your water!

“Eat your water,” is a phrase that Dr Murad uses to help people understand that being adequately hydrated for whole body health isn’t just about drinking eight glasses of water a day.

Cellular water is absorbed slowly, which provides hydration, so Dr. Murad recommends “eating your water” in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables in order to help keep your body sufficiently hydrated!

Hydration doesn’t mean the amount of water you consume but how much water you hold.  Hydrated cells are paramount for a healthy body.  Although it is incredibly important to drink water, particularly during hot weather, drinking too much water, too quickly, can actually flush nutrients out of the body as it will get rid of excess fluid by causing you to pee more!

Eating foods that contain a high percentage of water enables us to absorb the water more slowly.  This means that the water we get from food stays in our bodies longer and of course has the added benefits of minerals, vitamins and fibre – giving our bodies the nutrients it needs to be fit and healthy!  So it’s a win win!

Make sure you eat raw fruit and vegetables as cooking reduces the water content.  You can also blend the fruit and veg to make a delicious and nutritious juice or smoothie!  Add some ice too to help you cool down during the sweltering heatwaves!

Below are a selection of fruit and vegetables that are particularly high in water
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon
  • Raspberries
  • Peaches
  • Melons
  • Cucumber
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Peppers
And don’t forget bananas…

Although bananas are not quite so high in water content as other fruit and vegetables, they contain a high level of potassium which replenishes lost electrolytes – particularly important if you are sweating alot in the hot weather or during exercise.  Bananas also help to regulate fluids in the body as they also contain magnesium.

A great tip to keep hydrated is to consume water before you get thirsty!  So it is hugely important to keep drinking water… slowly… but also great for your body to ‘eat your water’ too!

Enjoy the rest of this amazing summer!
